Get Started

The first time you run the app, you must register with our server. Key in the email address and the password that you want to use for JoinCycling. The email address will be used for easy sending ride invitations to you from your registered friends.

After the registration, it is recommended that you get started by tapping the Settings button in the top left corner of the main view to call up the Settings View:

Enter your nickname. Your nickname will appear on the rides you have joined.

Email Address: Shows the email address you entered during the registration process. You may change it here, if needed.

Base: Here, you must set up your base position and description. Your base position will be used together with your search radius when looking up rides near you. Your base position and description will be used as the default meeting point when you add a new ride. To set the position of your base, you must first locate your base on the map view and then press and hold your finger on the map for at least 2 seconds until a pin is shown. Tap the Base (back) button and check that the address displayed is approximately your base address. Don't forget to key in a base Description text, such as 'Home' or similar.

Notes to Base setting: If you are on a holiday destination or simply if you would like to see if there are rides near another location, then you can just move your base temporarily and look up rides there. You can always reset your base back to your home base again.

Ride search radius: Set the Max Distance To Meeting Point. Decide how far you want to go from your base to join a ride. Your base position will be used together with your search radius when looking up rides near you. Do not set the search radius too high as this may slow down the search algorithm.

Km / miles: Your preferred measurement unit.

My Cycling Friends: Get connected with your cycling friends! Add the friends you ride with on a regular basis. Click here to see how to Add Friends.

Show ads: This app is connected to the advertising network hosted by app stores. Use this setting to turn the displaying of ads on or off.

Standard Ride Profile: This section of the Settings allows you to create a standard ride profile. This profile will be used each time you add a new ride. Read more in the section below.

Version: Displays the current app version number.

Set your Standard Ride Profile

Set your own preferred ride profile here, so you don´t need to set the ride profile each time you add a new ride. Your standard profile will automatically be adopted to the new ride. Note, that you can, of course, do modifications to the newly added ride later if needed.

Tap and choose from the possibilities provided. Your settings are automatically being saved.

Add a new Ride

This is what this app is all about: Adding rides for connected friends and others to view and to join. Let us walk through how to add a ride.

New rides are added from the main view:

Your main view may be completely empty if there are no rides added yet or rides may be shown dimmed like in this example. Dimmed rides are history - just hope you did not miss any of those rides!

Tap the plus sign in the top right corner of the view to add a new ride:

The newly added ride appears with much information already filled in: A short ride invitation title text, a suggested start time 2 hours from now, my preferred bike style and several indications that I have already joined this ride (of course I have joined the ride, because I am the organiser!).

The fact that I have already joined the ride is indicated by the tick marker next to the time and also by the Joined text above the bike style. Further, the dark green background color indicates that it is a ride which I have already joined.

If the view shows rides I have not joined, then the background coloring on those rides will be light green.

Tap the ride to view the ride details:

View the ride details and use the button panel below the ride details to view more or change something.

For now, let's tap the Rides button in the top left corner of the view, save the new ride when prompted to do so and go back to the rides view. How to edit a ride is described in the following sections.

View Rides

The main view of the app shows rides. The rides that are shown are either rides you have added yourself or rides added by your connected friends or public rides added by somebody else who has got the app. Only registered users of the app can view rides and add new rides and thus it requires a network of people for it to be really useful.

Rides are displayed using different background coloring in order to be easily recognizable:

Color legends:
Dark green is a future ride I have chosen to join.
Light green is a future ride I have not joined (yet).
Dimmed blue is a ride from the past.

A ride is displayed with basic information: A short ride invitation title text, a start time, bike style and indications if I have already joined the ride. If I have joined the ride then this is indicated by the tick marker next to the start time and also by the Joined text above the bike style.

If there are many rides, then you may have to scroll down to view them all.

Edit a Ride

To edit a ride, tap on the ride:

Tap the ride to get the detail view:

The button panel below the ride details varies depending on whether or not you are the organiser. Well, I am the organiser, and the Cancel, Invite and Edit buttons are enabled for me.

Edit the Ride Profile

To edit the Ride Profile I tap the Edit button. This gives me the ride edit view:

The ride edit view allows me to make modifications to the ride profile. I can tap and change the Ride Title, the Start Time, Meeting Point, Bike Style, Speed and Duration or Distance. The ride settings have been preset with defaults for you to review and you only need to change what does not suit you.

The ride title defaults to "<your nickname> invites to". You may tap the ride title and change the title to something that better describes the ride.

The Start Time defaults to 2 hours from now. Here I can tap the Start Time and change it.

Pin the Meeting Point

The Meeting Point defaults to your Base that you have set up in your Settings view. You may change the meeting point by tapping the meeting point and go to the map view:

I want the meeting point to be at another location, so I tap and hold my finger on the map for 2 seconds until the pin moves to the location my finger is pointing to:

Now the meeting point location has been altered. I have also tapped the info icon and changed the meeting point description.

The bike style and speed defaults to your standard ride profile settings, but the actual ride properties may be modified here.

Next, the ride duration or ride distance may be set.

Set Ride Visibility

The privacy setting for the ride can be set: Tap the visibility and decide if the ride is going to be visible to your connected cycling friends only or if the ride is going to be visible to everybody who has got the app. The public setting allows other cyclists to join your ride even if they are not directly connected with you. The default is visible to connected friends only.

Finally, a comment can be added, for instance add a brief description of the route.

Add Friends

Get connected with your cycling friends! Add to your settings the friends you ride with on a regular basis. Provided that your friends have got the app too, organizing your cycling rides gets easier! See how to send ride invitations in the next section.

Now, call up your Settings view:

Tap "My Cycling Friends" to get to the list of connected friends:

Tap the plus sign to add a new friend:

Type the name of your friend and the email address. Then tap Send, and you are nearly done. All you need to do is to review the JoinCycling invitation email and send it using your phone email account:

Notice! This requires you have a functional email account set up on your phone.

Send the email, sit back and relax. Wait for your friend to read the email, open the app and accept your invitation pop up message. When your friend has accepted your connection invitation, you are then hooked up with eachother through JoinCycling. You can see your newly connected friend in your Settings view.

If, for some reason, you want to disconnect one of your friends, you may do so by tapping the name of your now ex-friend and then tap the Remove button.

Send Ride Invitations

Ride invitations are sent from the ride details view:

Tap the Invite button:

You can send ride invitations to your connected cycling friends and you can also send ride invitations to other people who you are not directly connected with. It is recommended that you get connected with your cycling friends who you ride with on a regular basis. Then it becomes easier to invite your friends for rides.

To get connected with friends through JoinCycling, you must send connection requests first and wait for your friends to connect themselves to you. Connection requests are sent from the Settings view. More information can be found in the Add Friends section.

Once you have your friends connected through JoinCycling, you can tap My Cycling Friends and then select the friends you want to invite for the ride:

In the example above, I have 3 friends connected. Until you connect with your friends through the Settings, this invite list will be empty.

I select the friends I wish to invite, tap the Send button, review the suggested invitation email and then send the email.

Please note, that in order to be able to send ride invitations, a functional email account is required on your smartphone.

Tap Others if you wish to send a ride invitation to other people than your connected friends. This gets you directly to the suggested invitation email. Key in the email adresses you want to send the invitation to, review the email and then send it.
